Alcatel and Microsoft have announced an agreement to jointly develop an Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) solution designed to accelerate the availability of IPTV services for broadband operators world-wide.

The agreement calls for the companies to pursue a series of joint initiatives, including:

  • Enhancing application and network resilience for better reliability in large-scale deployments;

  • Integrating content, security, and digital rights management to ensure the secure delivery of high-quality content;

  • Managing quality of service (QoS) through intelligent video packet handling; and

  • End-to-end integration of management systems for application platforms and all components of the network including the home network.

Among the services that IPTV promises to deliver include customized delivery of new features through multiple devices, not limited to TVs; on-demand video streaming applications; interactive TV; video and voice communications; photo, music and home video sharing; and online gaming.

The two companies say they believe that the agreement will expand the number of IPTV players and enable telecommunication providers to take advantage of global economies of scale fuelled by large-scale IPTV deployments.
