A federal judge apparently has expressed doubts about the acquisitions of MCI and AT&T by Verizon Communications and SBC Communications, and he wants to review the details of the takeovers, according to a variety of news reports.

In a hearing earlier this week, U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan said he would review the mergers and report July 25 whether he believes additional scrutiny of the mergers is required. SBC's acquisition of AT&T has progressed to the point that SBC has taken over the AT&T brand name.

While the MCI and AT&T acquisitions have generally been accomplished, AT&T's pending acquisition of BellSouth hasn't been finalized. It is possible that Judge Sullivan could review that deal.
