Fifty two percent of enterprises are deploying some form of VoIP, 46 percent have deployment plans, and only two percent do not plan to use VoIP, according to a survey by the testing and monitoring firm Empirix.

The survey, conducted at recent VoiceCon and Internet Telephony shows, also found that despite these numbers, nearly two thirds of telecommunications professionals worry about putting a VoIP phone on their CEO's desk. Their number one concern was voice quality.

Among the survey's findings:

  • Voice quality and clarity was the number one concern of respondents, at 47 percent.

  • Thirty two percent of respondents who planned to deploy VoIP said they planned no quality assurance steps, but 97 percent of those who had already deployed VoIP had in fact taken quality assurance steps. According to Empirix, this indicates that as pilot rollouts begin, enterprises recognize the need for more thorough quality assurance.

  • Of those performing pre-deployment quality assurance, the majority reported using only basic network assessments (45 percent) and/or manual testing (41 percent). Automated testing was planned by just 31 percent of respondents.

  • VoIP security was a key concern, with 25 percent of respondents citing this as their top issue.

"This survey shows that despite a high level of concern about VoIP quality of service, most organizations are not implementing thorough quality assurance practices," Jeff Fried, CTO for the Enterprise Solutions Group at Empirix said in a statement. "We found this surprising, since quality assurance solutions could ease their concerns and lead to much smoother VoIP rollouts."
