ADTRAN today announced new Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch-routers, a new line of integrated stackable Layer 2 Gigabit Ethernet switches, and the addition of standards-based PoE functionality to its growing line of Ethernet switches.

The NetVanta 1524ST is the first in a series of ADTRAN stackable Layer 2 Gigabit Ethernet switches for deployment at the network edge. Its targeted at healthcare, education, retail or small and medium enterprise customers who are transitioning to Gigabit LANs or Gigabit-to-the-desktop applications.

The new switch provides wire-speed switching, Quality of Service (QoS), stacking and Link Aggregation as well as advanced management and security features. It has 24 10/100/1000Base-T ports with four combination SFP/1000Base-T Gigabit Ethernet ports for interconnecting LAN switches using copper or fiber. It also offers Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) in compliance with the new 802.1ab standard, allowing the NetVanta 1524ST to auto-discover neighboring Ethernet devices for simplified management and integration into multi-vendor environments.

The NetVanta 1524ST has a list price of $1,395 and is currently shipping.

The new NetVanta 1224R and 1224R PoE switch routers combine a 24-port managed Ethernet switch, a full-featured IP access router (with a modular WAN interface), a stateful inspection firewall, and optional VPN and dial backup capabilities. They come in a single 1U rackmount platform, designed for businesses needing converged WAN/LAN, branch office, or multi-site connectivity. For high-speed server access, uplink or stacking requirements, the NetVanta 1224STR and NetVanta 1224STR PoE add integral Gigabit Ethernet ports.ADTRAN claims that the new PoE devices eliminate the need for multiple network devices, conserve rack space, simplify network administration, and lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). A full-featured integral IP router allows for Internet access, corporate Frame Relay, or point-to-point connectivity utilizing industry-standard routing protocols such as OSPF, RIP, and BGP.

These NetVanta devices are currently shipping. NetVanta PoE switches are list priced at $1,795 (NetVanta 1224 PoE) and $1,895 (NetVanta 1224ST PoE), while NetVanta PoE switch-routers are priced at $2,195 (NetVanta 1224R PoE) and $2,295 (NetVanta 1224STR PoE).
