OAKDALE, Minn. -- Imation Corp (NYSE: IMN), a worldwide leader in removable data storage media, today announced that it has received LTO (Linear Tape-Open) Ultrium 4 certification from Measurement Analysis Corporation (MAC), an independent testing board for compliance verification testing and the LTO Consortium. As a result of this certification, Imation is the first to begin shipping the new product worldwide to meet customer demand.

Customers have already expressed interest in the advantages that LTO Ultrium format generation 4 provides, such as the doubling of the storage capacity of LTO 3, improved transfer rates and encryption capabilities. LTO 4 features 1.6 terabytes compressed capacity and transfer speeds of up to 240 megabytes per second. For additional protection, the generation 4 format will allow LTO tape drive hardware-based writing of encrypted data to the tape cartridge.

A leading manufacturer of LTO generations 1, 2 and 3, Imation manufactures the generation 4 media at its state-of-the-art Tera ngstrom™ coating facility in Weatherford, Okla., the only facility in the world built specifically for terabyte-class tape manufacturing.

“The LTO format continues to thrive in the mid-range server environment, and our customers are telling us that they are interested in the benefits, such as higher speed, capacity and encryption capabilities, that LTO Ultrium 4 provides. That’s why we are excited to be the first to ship this product generation,” said James Milligan, general manager, Commercial and OEM Division, Imation. “By leveraging our proprietary Tera Ǻngstrom manufacturing process, we are able to meet our customers’ needs and provide the highest levels of durability and reliability available.”

Imation LTO Ultrium generation 4 tape cartridges feature innovative and patented technologies that make Imation's LTO cartridges more robust than competitive offerings.

  • Imation patented corner snap - Improves cartridge strength by keeping the leader pin in place and the cartridge tightly closed in the event of rough handling.

  • Patented three-piece tape spool - Distributes stress more evenly over the tape surface for better performance and longer archival life.
