15 Top Companies for IT Job Postings

If you’re looking for a job in IT, you might assume that you’ll find the most open positions among the large technology companies in Silicon Valley.

But that assumption would be wrong.

Indeed.com recently analyzed its employment database and came up with a list of the companies that posted the most technology jobs over the last twelve months. Surprisingly, two-thirds of them aren’t traditional technology companies, and only two of them are headquartered in Silicon Valley. In fact, far more of them are in the Washington, D.C., area, and many are in the defense, consulting, healthcare and financial services industries.

Less surprisingly, all of these firms are large enterprises that employ tens or hundreds of thousands of employees. The smallest provides jobs for more than 19,000 people, while the largest has more than a half million workers. That employer says that it has added an average of 125 new jobs in the United States every day for the past five years.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the computer and information technology field is growing at an average of 13% per year. The occupation could create more than half a million new jobs between 2016 and 2026.

Here are more details about the 15 companies that posted the most tech job openings on Indeed.com over the last year.

15. Oracle: Founded in 1977, Oracle sells enterprise software, cloud computing and data center infrastructure and is best known for its database software. It is number 82 on the Fortune 500 list.

14. Northrop Grumman: Most people associate Northrop Grumman with military aircraft like the B-2 bomber, F/A-18 and unmanned vehicles, but the company is also a major supplier of military technology and cyber defense capabilities. It is also an important supplier to the space industry.

13. General Dynamics Information Technology: A subsidiary of General Dynamics Corp., General Dynamics IT supplies U.S., state and local government agencies with information technology, cloud computing, cyber security, managed services and other technology-related products and services. It is number 99 on the Fortune 500 list.

12. Capgemini: Doing business in more than 40 countries around the world, Capgemini is one of the world's largest consulting companies. It focuses particularly on helping companies navigate digital transformation, and it offers services related to technology implementation, cloud computing, cybersecurity and GDPR compliance.

11. IBM: Founded more than a hundred years ago, IBM is one of the oldest companies in the technology industry. Its key offerings include cloud computing, artificial intelligence, IT infrastructure, software and related services. It is a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500, and it is number 34 on the Fortune 500 list.

10. CACI International Inc.: Americans who live outside the Washington, D.C., area might not have heard of CACI before, but it is a major provider of IT solutions and services for national defense and intelligence agencies, as well as some other federal agencies. Many of its employees are veterans of the armed forces.

9. Apple: Number four on the Fortune 500 list, Apple is the largest technology company in the world in terms of revenue. It is best known for the iPhone and iPad, as well as its Mac line of personal computers. It was founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne.

8. UnitedHealth Group: The largest healthcare company in the world by revenue, UnitedHealth Group is number five on the Fortune 500 list. It provides health insurance and, through its Optum business unit, sells technology related to health care.

7. Booz Allen Hamilton: Founded in 1914, Booz Allen Hamilton provides management and technology consulting services, and in fact, it was one of the first management consulting firms in existence. It has teams focused on analytics, digital solutions, engineering and applied science, and cybersecurity.

6. Leidos: Formerly known as Science Applications International Corporation, Leidos is a defense contractor and federal government supplier with expertise in aviation, cybersecurity, integrated systems, operations and logics, and other aspects of technology. It is number 292 on the Fortune 500 list.

5. Best Buy: Founded in 1966 as a store called “Sound of Music,” Best Buy adopted its new moniker in 1983. It has more than 1,000 big-box stores in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and it sells appliances, cell phones, computers and other electronics.

4. JPMorgan Chase: Founded as Bank of the Manhattan Company in 1799, JPMorgan is easily the oldest company on this list. It's also one of the largest financial institutions in the world with more than $2.6 trillion in assets. It is 20th on the Fortune 500 list.

3. Lockheed Martin: One of the largest defense contractors in the United States, Lockheed Martin has four main business areas: aeronautics, missiles and fire control, rotary and mission systems (helicopters, navy ships and other technology), and space. It has facilities in all 50 states and 52 countries, and it is number 59 on the Fortune 500.

2. Microsoft: Microsoft is one of the world’s largest technology companies. Best known for its software, including the Windows operating system and the Office suite, it also offers cloud computing services, the Xbox gaming system, Surface devices, the LinkedIn social network, developer tools and more. It is 30th on the Fortune 500.

1. Amazon: Amazon posted the highest number of technology jobs on Indeed.com last year by a very wide margin. The company says that it has created an average of 125 more U.S. jobs every day for the last five years. Founded as an online retailer, it has branched out into cloud computing, smart home devices, tablets and original content. It is eighth on the Fortune 500 list.
