Employers who want to keep tabs on employee social media behavior and make sure they're not tweeting corporate secrets will be able to cast a wider net for problem posts with the latest update to the monitoring service from SocialLogix, the company said.

SocialSentry 2.0, which is available immediately as Software as a Service, includes new visualization and monitoring tools to help corporate watchdogs spot emerging trends not identified in any specific keyword watch list, the company said.

"The initial release of SocialSentry was designed to address known threats related to compliance, governance, and risk as well as protect against the viral nature of the social networking threat," Dan Romine, founder and CEO, said in a press release. "SocialSentry 2.0 adds to an already innovative product the capability to help organizations identify emerging threats by analyzing the content and context of social media communication."

The initial release of the product last year attracted mentions in the New York Times technology blog, as well as analysis from FindLaw columnist Eric Sinrod who warned of complications such as social media discrimination claims that could arise from such monitoring, if used improperly.

Other products for controlling employee Internet use, such as Websense's web security gateways, focus on filtering and monitoring access from within corporate networks. SocialLogix is different in that it monitors the social websites themselves, trying to identify and track postings by employees regardless of whether they were posted from a work location. Another vendor, Social Intelligence offers a similar employee monitoring service as an adjunct to its product for using social media to screen employees before they are hired.

SocialLogix said new features in SocialSentry 2.0 include a new monitoring dashboard, tag clouds for at-a-glance review of common topics, and enhanced regular expression pattern matching for keyword tracking.
