CA on Monday released the latest versions of its storage management software for mainframe and distributed systems, saying the new technology will help reduce administration costs and improve data security.
The CA Storage Resource Management system provides centralized management of Unix, Linux, NetWare, and Windows-based storage systems, enabling IT staff to allocate capacity, monitor usage, and define and enforce policies. The latest version, SRM r 11.7, provides detailed reports about storage capacity associated with large numbers of virtual server instances.
CA also introduced an upgrade of Vantage SRM, which automates monitoring and analysis tasks and takes corrective actions across an IBM z/OS storage environment. New audit functions enable IT staff to pinpoint data sets that aren't being backed up in accordance with corporate policies, which helps improve data protection.
Both products operate under a common user interface, providing customers with the option of monitoring and managing their storage infrastructure from a single point of control, CA said. Pricing was not disclosed.
CA introduced the software nearly a week after Hewlett-Packard unveiled hardware and software for reallocating and managing storage resources across virtual and physical environments. HP claims the technology reduces cost by avoiding excess storage capacity.
The new hardware includes the StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array 6400 and 8400. The software is the SAN Virtualization Services Platform 2.1, a network-based storage virtualization technology that can reallocate resources to make better use of available storage and streamline operations by simplifying migration, replication, and backup.
