NEW YORK -- Varonis Systems Inc., the foremost innovator and provider of comprehensive, actionable data governance solutions, today introduced the latest version of its DataPrivilege data entitlement management software. DataPrivilege enables data owners within an organization to determine who has access to folders containing sensitive business information without involving the IT department, infrastructure changes or business disruption. As a result, enterprises can protect valuable corporate data assets, increase security and accountability for data access, and reduce the burden placed on IT to manage this process.
Organizations of all sizes have volumes of files and folders on their file servers with no real way to see who has access, control who should have access or audit data usage by individual. Also, IT departments are struggling with being able to revoke permissions for people or contractors who have changed roles, “everyone” permissions that are assigned by default and inherited permissions that were inadvertently assigned.
“As a multi-discipline, multi-strategy investment services firm, we keep vigil over a broad range of highly confidential and sensitive information,” said Chris Corrado, director of technology infrastructure for a large hedge fund based in Stamford, Conn. “A highly granular and auditable process of managing data access and entitlement can benefit greatly from automation and the right tools. The latter is our purpose for planned deployment of DataPrivilege.”
Data entitlement management is a critical facet of data governance, which is the framework of people, permissions and processes that are employed in proper data use. Data governance helps enterprises overcome the challenges of providing warranted controls and usage audits for unstructured data – the documents, spreadsheets and presentations that contain companies’ most valuable intellectual property, personnel and customer information and sensitive financial data.
DataPrivilege brings together data owners and users in a forum for communicating, authorizing and activating entitlements. It enables enterprises to reduce the likelihood of data misuse and, more importantly, ensure that permissions to key company information are warranted and based on an employee’s business need.
“Automating the workflow of granting and revoking data entitlements frees up precious IT cycles that can be better applied to more strategic, business-driven initiatives,” said Chris Christiansen, program vice president for IDC's Security Products and Services. “Perhaps most importantly though, by putting control in the hands of people who have context for the data and its use, organizations can significantly lower the risk that sensitive information will be misused.”
