Why Anti-Spam Laws Won't Work

A while ago I wrote about my not-too-bright state legislator, the one who proudly announced he sponsored (claims he wrote) an anti-spam bill. Unfortunately, he announced it on a mailing list I didn't request to be signed up on.

I'm not sure if it went into law, and quite frankly I don't really care, because it was a grand stand play. I really don't think spam can be stopped. Look at the anti-fax laws we have.

Every day I walk into my office to at least one, if not more faxes "Corporate Travel" at (800) 418-9630. Then there are those great low-rate mortgages from (800) 418-5762. And how about "Wall Street Money Makers" at www.poseidis.com?

I'm particularly perturbed by our "Corporate Travel Department" at (800) 456-0034, because it keeps offering my employees such great deals. Soon they won't show up for work! Of course, I don't really worry, as I'm the only employee of my company. For those of you into penny stocks, how about contacting Micro-Cap Penny Picker? Too bad these brilliant guys give you no way to get a hold of them.

I could go on and on and on, but I won't. What's interesting is that these faxes all give a phone number to call, which will take you off their fax promotions. Just as the Federal anti-faxing law states. If you believe that will work, I have a bridge for sale, real cheap.Now, back to "my not too bright" legislator. Does he really believe an anti-spam bill will work? How can the FCC be expected to cope; it can't enforce the anti-fax bill already in existence. Is there anyone out there in FCC land enforcing these laws?

I can hear only crickets.
