Sweden's Transmode Systems AB has introduced a pluggable DWDM optics capability that officials say supports both CWDM to DWDM. This will create a migration path that will not force users to standardize on one technology, and allow the two technologies to coexist during a migration path as organizations move to a pure DWDM environment.

Transmode uses a cascading filter approach that adds new DWDM channels to live networks already built using CWDM. Officials insist this can be done without affecting existing CWDM traffic. The resultant hybrid network supports at least 30 WDM channels, more than adequate for the vast majority of Metro applications.
