Sonus Networks marked a milestone in its growth and in the evolution of voice over IP (VoIP) technology with the announcement yesterday that its networks carried 10 billion minutes of customer traffic in December. That is an increase of 66 per cent over the 6 billion minutes of traffic carried in December 2003.
According to Infonetics Research, the worldwide VoIP equipment sales increased 69 per cent last year, with Sonus helping to drive technology adoption. According to Infonetics, the company has dominated the packet voice gateway space since the middle of last year.
Indeed, a recent study from Probe Research Group, for example, shows that Sonus carried a substantial portion of global VoIP traffic. According to Sonus founder and chief technology officer Mike Hluchyj, the company's success as well as the impressive number of carrier minutes, represents a significant shift transformation in telecommunications.
"VoIP technology is the first major structural shift in telecommunications infrastructure in the last fifty years. The market has now reached mainstream adoption as carriers worldwide are recognizing the benefits of VoIP architectures," Hluchyj said in a statement. "Our announcement today is a major milestone not only for Sonus, but also for the industry at large. Carriers globally are continuing to accelerate their adoption of VoIP technologies, and we are pleased that Sonus continues to be recognized as a leader in such an exciting and important industry."
