Ethernet layer switch revenue gained between the first and second quarters this year with Layer 2-3 Ethernet switch revenue jumping 10 percent to $3.4 billion, Infonetics Research said Thursday.

Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst at Infonetics, is forecasting worldwide L2-L3 Ethernet switch revenue to reach the $16.4 billion mark in 2008.

“Cisco’s performance had the greatest impact on the market,” said Machowinski in a statement. “Not only did their switch business return to growth after two down quarters, but growth was quite strong, in the double digits.” He noted that unmanaged switches account for 45 percent of Layer 2-3 fixed configuration port shipments, but only 8 percent of revenue.

Machowinski also surveyed Layer 4-7 shipments, finding that revenue was up two percent in the most recently-examined quarter to $179 million.
