The red-hot fibre channel storage market continues to sizzle, as shipments of fibre channel host bus adapter (HBA) port shipments jumped more than 40 percent during the second quarter, according to a report from Dell'Oro Group.

"IBM and Dell both posted robust server and storage sales, and this strength is driving demand for Fibre Channel HBAs," said Tam Dell'Oro, president and principal SAN analyst, in a statement this week. "The combination of business continuity issues that require secondary storage, new applications such as digital imaging, and government regulations that dictate additional backups of certain financial information, is fueling users' voracious appetite for more storage."

The networking and telecommunications market research firm said that QLogic led the HBA pack in growth, followed by Emulex and LSI Logic.

The figures released by Dell'Oro compared the second quarter of 2005 with the like quarter in the previous year. "The growth in the SAN market will not let up any time soon," Dell'Oro said.
