BANGALORE, India — More than 130,000 registrants have taken up the .in domain name registration, under a plan by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of India to overcome the lack of a national domain registration name. The number is up from the just 6,500 .in registrations in January.

Started in Oct. 2004, the plan was designed to remove restrictions in the existing procedures that prevented a liberal and quick approach to domain name registration. The plan also reflects the country of origin of the registrant.

The ministry is developing a roadmap to implement multi-lingual domain names under the Internationalized Domain Names scheme.
