A group of leading mobile phone vendors said Friday they will work together to bring about widespread delivery of broadcast television to mobile devices.
The effort, which is part of the work of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), is aimed at developing specifications that will enable broadcast service delivery to devices. The vendors working together in the effort are Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Siemens and Sony Ericsson.
The group said in a statement that they expected their efforts to increase usage of media on mobile devices. Mobile broadcast services are in the process of being introduced in Japan and the group hopes that such applications will become standard worldwide.
"Content is king, but mobility is queen. And we have come together to make this royal marriage happen," Motorola's Steffen Ring said in a statement.
