NOAA Chooses DS3 DataVaulting
DS3 DataVaulting extends backup and recovery support for National Weather Service Southern Region
August 19, 2008
CHANTILLY, Va. -- DS3 DataVaulting, a veteran data management solutions provider and the first in North America to manage a petabyte of customer restorable data, announced today a contract to provide comprehensive backup and restore services for the NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) Southern Region Headquarters. The contract builds on the original 2005 award, with an option for a three year extension.
Under the terms of the contract, DS3 DataVaulting will continue to provide its market leading web-based solutions backed by unmatched service levels, to help ensure business continuity for the NWS Southern Region. The Southern Region is able to back up critical data mapped directly to mission requirements, and if necessary, conduct restores in as little as three hours. Physically, our building could go away and when DS3 reestablishes the information for us, it could all be downloaded onto another computer in another location and we would be up and running in a few hours,” stated Mario D. Valverde, Chief of the Systems Integration Branch National Weather Service, Southern Region. The online, off-site approach enables secure and simplified backup of such key information as mail, financial and business documents, while eliminating the need for tapes, increasing reliability and reducing restore times.
In addition, DS3 provides Backup Lifecycle Management (BLM), an effective secondary storage solution for important but non-critical data. BLM combines online, near-line and off-line storage, utilizing restorable, searchable and fully secure data images. “We chose DS3 because it has a continuity of operations that fits our needs in terms of technology, service and cost,” continued Valverde. “We don’t have to worry about hardware and we spend less time backing up data, with increased reliability. In addition, the DS3 team is extremely responsive, providing us with excellent customer service.”
