Alestra, a provider of broadband, IP and value added services to the Mexican market, plans to use Lucent's Metropolis ADM MultiService Mux, to support the deployment of high-speed service offerings in its metro-area markets. The company hopes to use this network infrastructure to offer multiple services, including: Ethernet private lines, local area networks (LANs), as well as other data services. According to officials, this is the first deployment of the advanced optical multiplexer in Latin America.

The new multi-service platform will support business and residential demand for data and IP applications, which officials say require dramatically more bandwidth than is currently being offered.

Alestra officials are betting that Lucent's metro optical solutions will eliminate bottlenecks in existing metro networks by providing an integrated Ethernet over SDH metro access multiplexer, which enables the service providers to migrate from existing time-division multiplexed (TDM) networks to data-aware packet networks.

Lucent will also expand Alestra's embedded base of high-capacity WaveStar OLS 80Gs to interconnect all Alestra Backbone Rings across the country. This DWDM backbone will support a wide range of optical and data-formatted channels simultaneously. Lucent will provide the systems integration services.
