McAfee Rolls Out SMB Intrusion Prevention Appliance

McAfee on Monday debuted a fourth network security appliance, this one designed for small and medium-sized businesses.

The intrusion prevention appliance IntruShield 1400 features four 10/100 Ethernet ports, fail-over capability, remote Web-based management, and detection and blocking of a range of peer-to-peer traffic, such as KaZaa, as well as various instant messaging applications.

Its prime responsibility, however, is to sniff out incoming intrusion attempts -- including those made by network-attacking worms such as this year's Sasser -- that are known as well as those that are so-called "zero-day" threats for which patches aren't yet available. The appliance will also defend against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and notify administrators when anomalous traffic is detected.

The IntruShield 1400 is available now at a starting price of $14,995. Other models in the intrusion prevention appliance line, such as the 1200 and 2600, target enterprises, and cost $10,995 and $34,995, respectively.
