MARINA DEL REY, Calif. -- Imation Corp (NYSE: IMN), a worldwide leader in removable data storage media, today announced at its 14th annual North American Data Center Management Symposium, that it submitted its first sample lot of LTO Ultrium format generation 4 for media compliance testing. Already a leading manufacturer of LTO generations 1, 2 and 3, Imation will manufacture the generation 4 media at its state-of-the-art Tera ngstrom coating facility in Weatherford, Okla., the only facility in the world built specifically for terabyte-class tape manufacturing.
The LTO Ultrium format generation 4 doubles storage capacity over generation 3 – up from 800 GB in generation 3 (assuming a 2:1 compression) to 1.6 terabyte compressed capacity. And transfer rates are also improved – reaching speeds up to 240 megabytes per second. For security purposes, generation 4 will feature encryption capabilities designed to enable LTO tape drive hardware-based writing of encrypted data to the LTO Ultrium tape cartridge, which helps protect the storage and transport of sensitive information.
“LTO Ultrium generation 4 offers real advancements in capacity, performance and security,” said Subodh Kulkarni, vice president, research, development and manufacturing, Imation. “By utilizing our proprietary Tera Ǻngstrom technology to achieve increased areal densities, thinner substrates, tighter head-tape interface tolerances and higher tape speeds, customers will benefit from next-generation media performance with the highest levels of durability and reliability.”
“Imation understands the demands companies face today for greater tape capacity and increased performance to support backup and restore applications, disaster recovery and data archiving,” said James Milligan, general manager, Americas Commercial and OEM Division, Imation. “We are committed to advancing technologies and formats that help companies meet these demands, and expect to be among the first to offer our customers the new LTO generation 4 product in 2007.”
