Ericsson Targets Mobile Triple-Play Services

Ericsson has announced that it will expand its Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) portfolio into additional frequency bands in preparation for the expected consumer demand for mobile triple play services.

The company is expanding its WCDMA product range into the 850MHzand 1800MHz frequency bands, as well as 1700MHz for the Japanese and 1.7/2.1GHz for the American markets. Ericsson also plans to support the 900MHz and 2.5GHz bands for future applications,

The expansion into new frequencies is part of Ericsson's overall strategy for triple play and advanced network services, in which it expects wireless to play a major role. "We believe that through this strategy, WCDMA will be the leading access technology supporting mass-market services, such as telephony, broadband and TV." Ericsson Vice President for WCDMA Mikael Back said in a statement.

The 850MHz products will be available later this year, while products supporting the other frequencies will be available by the middle of 2006. Ericsson Mobile Platforms will add 2.1GHz, 1900MHz, 1700MHz and 850MHz support to its WCDMA and High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) solutions in 2006.
