EMC Gets SMARTS update from February 2005

EMC bought SMARTS, an event correlation and exception management tool vendor, for $260 million. Can the storage vendor make it as an enterprise management tool vendor?

The competition will be stiff. Concord Communications added exception management through the acquisition of Aprisma. BMC added configuration management by buying Marimba. And Hewlett-Packard continues to develop its management technology.

EMC has shown it can work outside the storage box with its VMware and Documentum acquisitions. Can it push SMARTS to the top of the service-management pile? Yes, if management matters.
