Through EdgeControl, Akamai's new management service, subscribers can monitor usage and performance of Java applications. This magic monitoring comes from Akamai's developed management application, which talks Web services to the Akamai portal and SNMP to management applications like HP OpenView, OpenNMS and Aprisma's Spectrum. Sitting behind the enterprise firewall, Akamai's management application talks to Akamai through an HTTP-encrypted tunnel. So without any changes to Web apps, enterprise network management applications can gather application performance and fault data.

Leveraging Akamai's widely deployed network presence without a lot of heavy lifting on the front end is a good idea.
