VMwares acquisition of Israeli application performance specialist B-Hive Networks for an undisclosed fee today reflects the next big trend in virtualization.

Virtualization, despite its ability to consolidate multiple physical systems, still poses a major monitoring challenge for users, with applications a particular pain point.

With the acquisition of B-Hive, VMware is looking to offer performance management and service level reporting for applications running within virtual machines on both servers and desktops, continuing the vendor’s recent spate of announcements in this space.

Earlier this month VMware beefed up its ability to manage applications across virtual environments, clearly looking to ease users’ fears about complex virtual infrastructures.

Rival Citrix recently overhauled its own virtualization strategy, rolling its XenApp application virtualization technology into the same software license as its XenDesktop offering, and unveiling software agents for handling virtual applications .VMware, on the other hand, is clearly focusing its efforts on monitoring the performance of applications. The vendor is currently planning to relaunch the technology from its acquisition of virtual application specialist ThinStall as a VMware-branded product, something that will be completed by the middle of this year.

With users looking to take their virtualization strategies to the next level, it seems clear that B-Hive has been added to the VMware portfolio in preparation for the ThinStall re-launch.
