Syncsort announced today a new data protection product tailored specifically for small businesses. Called Backup Express SMB, it is based upon Syncsort's flagship Backup Express 2.3 offering that delivers application data protection, disaster recovery, and open file protection.

The primary difference between the two versions of the product is price and ease of use: Backup Express SMB delivers media device automation, a browser-based GUI, and clustered system support.

"Small and midsize businesses face the same burgeoning amount of data, complex environments, and shrinking backup windows as large companies—but usually with a far smaller IT staff," said Dan Regan, Syncsort's senior vice president, in a statement.

Components available with Backup Express SMB include application and database agents for hot backup and granular restore; snapshot agents; tape media device support; heterogeneous clients; small clustered environments backup; and NDMP agents for network attached storage devices for either data and application backup source or target. The Backup Express SMB master server is available for UNIX, Windows, and Linux.
