Report: Supercomputing Center Comes To Upstate New York

MANHASSET, N.Y. — Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York state and IBM have collaborated to establish a $100 million supercomputing center in the upstate New York town of Troy according to a Bizjournals.com report.

Called the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations, the center will focus on reducing the time and costs associated with designing and manufacturing nanoscale materials, devices and systems, officials announced Wednesday (May 10), the report was quoted as saying.

The center will be both at the Rensselaer campus in Troy and at the Rensselaer Technology Park in North Greenbush, the report said.

Under the arrangement, Rensselaer will reportedly invest $34 millon in the supercomputing center over the next five years, IBM $33 million and New York state $33 million. Officials were quoted as saying the center, to begin operating in about six months, would create 300 to 500 jobs within the next three years.

Rensselaer will dedicate a multidisciplinary scientific and engineering team that will focus on collaborative nanotechnology research.Upstate New York is gaining importance as a research and development center for advanced technologies.

A consortium of semiconductor companies, under research grants from Semiconductor Industry Association's new Nanoelectronics Research Initiative (NRI), is creating a nanoelectronics research center at the State University of New York at Albany.
