Novell on Tuesday launched a preview version of the SuSE Linux Enterprise 10 platform.

Pre-release versions of the server and the desktop operating systems are available for download at no charge from the Waltham, Mass., company's Web site. The final releases of the OSes are scheduled for later in the summer.

Demand for the previews has been exceptionally high, the company said.

"The value of SuSE Linux Enterprise 10 can best be experienced hands-on, and we firmly believe that those people who take some time to kick the tires will end up wanting to drive it off the lot when it's formally released in the next few weeks," Justin Steinman, director of product marketing at Novell, said in a statement.

In November, Novell released SuSE Linux 10, which replaced the professional version of the OS. Linux 10 includes both the GNOME 2.12 and KDE 3.4 Linux desktops, the Firefox Web browser, a preview release of the OpenOffice.org 2.0 productivity suite and more than 1,000 Linux applications and utilities.SuSE Linux Enterprise includes features geared toward large organizations looking to run business applications on an open-source platform.
