IT security focuses on electronic information, and physical security deals with everything else (smart cards, video cameras, biometrics and so on). Since these are separate domains, why, the thinking goes, should they be integrated?

Sure, no one is going to integrate a fence and a database. But if you don't integrate the management of access privileges inside the fence and the database, there will be gaps in your organization's security. Think about that next time you hear the incongruous concepts of physical and IT security.
