University of Utah Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute protects and preserves research data with Atempo Time Navigator
October 15, 2007
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Atempo, Inc., a leading provider of cross-platform data protection and archiving solutions, today announced that the University of Utahs Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute, an internationally recognized leader in visualization, scientific computing, and image analysis, relies on Atempo Time Navigator secure tiered storage management solution to preserve and restore over 100 terabytes of high-value research data. Delivered through Atempo strategic partnership with SGI (NASDAQ:SGIC), Time Navigator is deployed in conjunction with an SGI® InfiniteStorage virtualized data management solution to handle the SCI Institute’s increasingly complex and critical system storage and backup needs.
The SCI Institute is home to over 115 faculty, students and staff whose overarching research objective is to create new scientific computing techniques, tools, and systems that enable solutions in biomedicine and computational science affecting various aspects of human life. Noted for their breadth of collaborations on an international scale, the researchers must be able to easily and frequently retrieve large volumes of archived scientific data from any point in time. However, both the volume of high-value research data and size of the individual files had expanded beyond the capabilities of the Institute’s storage system. Assisted by a computing research infrastructure grant from the National Science Foundation, the SCI Institute turned to Atempo to implement a storage solution that would allow its IT team to manage, backup and recover the growing amount of data.
“The SCI Institute had relied previously on other commercial and internal backup systems that did not offer as much flexibility and sophistication as Atempo’s Time Navigator, which better suits the breadth of our research data,” said Steve Parker, a faculty member specializing in computational science and visualization in the SCI Institute. “By partnering with both SGI and Atempo, we have solved an increasingly complex and critical data management problem. These solutions will help advance our research in diverse scientific disciplines to the next level.”
