UMWA Picks Xiotech
Health and pension benefits provider turns to Xiotech's TimeScale replication services to protect critical data
September 25, 2007
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the UMWA Health and Retirement Funds is a group of six multi-employer plans that provides health and pension benefits to retired coal miners and their eligible dependents. The organization's benefit processing system contains a vast amount of historical data required to maintain and process benefits. The organization's board of trustees and HIPAA regulations require that this information be available, accessible and maintained for long periods of time.
Prior to the new Xiotech service, the UMWA Health and Retirement Funds relied on daily tape backups stored at a second location to protect its data, and had reservations about the reliability of the backups, the possibility of data loss, and the security of transporting tapes off site. Already a Xiotech Magnitude(R) storage area network (SAN) customer, the UMWA Health and Retirement Funds determined Xiotech's TimeScale Replication Services would provide the organization with a cost-effective, yet more secure method for protecting this critical information.
"We've been a Xiotech customer for more than seven years and have always been more than satisfied with the superb service and outstanding products, so it was a natural progression for us to rely on Xiotech to secure our most sensitive data," said David Wilsey, technology director, UMWA Health and Retirement Funds. "The new TimeScale service ensures our data won't be lost in the event of a disaster and drastically reduces our recovery window. If a disaster strikes, we can have our data restored in less than 48 hours as opposed to the 96 hours our tape system took, which is the level of service our customers expect."
