Tips For Preventing Data Center Outages

Avoiding costly data center outages isn't easy, but experts offer advice for reducing unplanned downtime.

A recent report by the Ponemon Institute indicated that data center outages are more costly than ever for enterprises. However, avoiding data center outages is no easy task. Data centers have become ever more important to the modern enterprise, and in the process they've grown more complex, and have emerged as a more enticing target for cybercriminals.

Yet most companies have overlooked the most obvious way to reduce outages, said Eric Hanselman, chief analyst at 451 Research.

"Any time an enterprise is looking to make sure it has solid availability, the top three things it should be tackling are monitoring, monitoring and monitoring," Hanselman said during a phone interview. "I'm amazed by the number of enterprises that haven't invested much in this area."
