Sony Electronics on Wednesday said it has started shipping in the United States a 50GB Blu-ray recordable disc.

The high-storage disc can only be burned once. A rewriteable version is set to ship this year, the unit of consumer electronics giant Sony Corp., said.

The new disc is capable of storing more than four hours of high-definition video at a transfer rate of 24MB per second. The disc has a retail price of $48.

Sony, Hitachi and Philips support the Blu-ray format, which competes in the U.S. market with HD DVD. Toshiba and NEC support the latter.
