LOS ALTOS, Calif. -- Internet Research Group (IRG) today announced the release of a new infrastructurereport -- "Virtualization - Advice to Infrastructure Vendors." Thisis the second report in IRG's series of research reports onvirtualization. Virtual appliances use virtualization technology toabstract an appliance software image from the hardware whilemaintaining the packaging and ease of deployment of a hardwareappliance. This report takes an advanced look at the long termbusiness and industry-wide implications.

"Simplistically, a virtual appliance is a physical appliance softwareimage deployed onto a virtual infrastructure," noted Peter Christy,co-founder of IRG. "Virtual Appliances share most of the valuepropositions of a physical server but seem to be a very powerfulconcept and can potentially change the very way we think aboutbuilding infrastructure systems such as security or WANoptimization."
