InfoVista software, which is typically used for network performance management, is making a more significant move into application management. Last month, InfoVista purchased the small French software provider Accellent, who makes the 5View appliance. Accellent is an appliance very similar to NetScout, Network General, or NetQoS that will gather application-specific network traffic and provide that information back to IT operations or business users.

For existing InfoVista customers, however, there may be a long road ahead to integrate the real-time network monitoring with their existing SNMP polling engine. While network traffic monitoring is an important element of application management, there are other puzzle pieces that need to be developed to provide a complete picture of application performance.

In other vendors, we have seen the integration of appliance-based data into traditional software solutions to be problematic at best. Hopefully, InfoVista will break this mold.
