Storage Networks Hit Earth Week

This week marks Earth Week, a time when we can expect lots of announcements around all things green, including green IT in general and green storage in particular.

Things have kicked off with startup Aquantia, which scored $26 million in February, unveiling what it claims is the first PHY component to solve the 10GBase-T power issue.

The firm is debuting with silicon that draws 5.5 watts in a triple-speed port meant for NICs and switches. The component works over a short-reach 100-meter distance. Aquantia says it will offer the chip in the third quarter and anticipates design OEMs planning 2009 product releases.

We've also heard from consultant George Crump of Storage Switzerland this week, who has strong views on how NAS users can get greener -- a follow-on to his advice on green backup in his preceding column.

We're aware of at least one big storage company planning a green announcement tomorrow, so stay tuned. And watch for our new poll on green storage going up later today.
