RIM goes dual mode with 8820: Page 2 of 2

Beyond Wi-Fi and FMC, RIM has also offered a plethora of other features including GPS, voice dialing and, spelled out in the press release no doubt as a knock to Apple, an external battery. However, the BlackBerry 8820 has one similarity to the popular iPhone: Neither include 3G functionality (both use EDGE rather than the faster UMTS or HSDPA technologies). I'm unsure as to whether this was a concern for battery life or if RIM can't get a reliable WCDMA chip provider (RIM has offered 3G on CDMA based phones on both Verizon and Sprint). But with all of the functionality RIM has packed into the 8820, the lack of 3G is at least a little disappointing.
