Standalone PIN pads and other combination-style technology (including push-button combination locks on doors) are frequently encountered but fall short. Combinations can be recorded by nearby cameras, or recovered due to thermal residue--the lingering heat left on the buttons by the finger can be seen with a thermal camera; see for yourself.

Finally, scramble PIN pads (the numbers randomly change locations between uses) help defeat this problem, but the market is very limited on offerings. Hirsch Electronics, a primary scramble pad vendor, requires additional Hirsch components to use the system, leaving you stuck with a proprietary solution. --Jeff Forristal
