HP Taps PolyServe To Enhance NAS Offerings

Hewlett-Packard signed a deal this week to buy Beaverton, Ore. utility computing software vendor PolyServe.

HP's acquisition of PolyServe is a logical progression of the partnership they've already established to produce HP's Enterprise File Service Clustered Gateway product. PolyServe's file system software gave HP a highly scalable storage virtualization solution for shared NAS namespace across their midrange EVA SAN platform. It's unclear at this point how this announcement will affect existing PolyServe partners such as IBM, Microsoft, Dell and various Linux vendors, and HP hasn't stated whether the PolyServe software products will continue to be marketed to customers using other storage platforms. PolyServe also currently markets a database utility for Microsoft SQL server, and the HP announcement makes no mention of the future for that product line, so it remains to be seen if HP was only interested in acquiring PolyServe for their file system technology.

HP says the purchase of its long time partner gives the vendor "a strong entry point" into the enterprise network-attached storage (NAS) arena by providing HP with software to provide NAS technology in blade server environments.
