Avaya Launches In-Building Mobile Devices

Avaya's 3641 and 3645 Vo-Fi product announcement echoes similar news Nortel made about a month ago. Avaya will be OEMing PolyCom's (formerly SpectraLink) IEEE 802.11a/b/g handsets, a smart move considering that the market for single-mode Vo-Fi handsets will likely remain too small for big-name vendors to develop their own. The Avaya 3631 VoWLAN handset offers a sophisticated carpeted-office flair to contrast the more ruggedized look of the other models, but it's not an original--it's identical to Samsung's SMT-W5100E.

Avaya unveiled a set of new in-building IP mobile devices this week designed for staff members who need to stay connected as they roam through a building or campus.

The voice-over-wireless devices are aimed at workers in hospitals, industrial businesses and other organizations where staff members are frequently on the move but need a tool to record and/or access networked information.
