New EMC NetWorker And Data Domain Integration Dramatically Speeds Backups

BOSTON, May 11. EMC, the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced new capabilities for its EMC NetWorker backup and recovery software that will dramatically increase backup speed and management through the innovative new integration with DD Boost software for EMC Data Domain deduplication storage systems. EMC NetWorker integration with EMC Data Domain, combined with its existing integration with EMC Avamar, will make it the only backup software application to provide seamless integration with the industry's two leading deduplication solutions.

The tight integration of enterprise deduplication storage and backup software is the foundation for effective backup redesign to minimize tape and support the needs of virtual data centers. EMC's approach allows IT organizations to better manage backup processes, fully maximize the benefits of disk-based data protection systems and use efficient network replication to minimize reliance on slower tape-based backup methods. Unlike other backup vendors, who typically do not offer deduplication storage systems or an integrated method for managing them, EMC is utilizing its broad portfolio of products to provide both -- enabling a much simpler, more predictable and more supportable solution.

NetWorker integration with the new DD Boost software will result in an optimized interface with Data Domain storage systems, providing significant performance and usability advantages.
--  Parts of the deduplication process are distributed to the NetWorker
backup storage nodes, dramatically increasing backup speed, reducing
network traffic and delivering more efficient usage of resources.
--  Cloning Controlled Replication delivers management of DD Replicator
software and provides complete catalog awareness of all backups at
both primary and secondary locations including support for separate
      retention policies.
--  New wizard-based discovery and configuration streamlines the setup of
      Data Domain systems.
--  Innovative monitoring and data collection reports for Data Domain
systems to simplify administration and increase system visibility for
      the entire backup operation.

"With the formation of CharterCARE Health Partners and the convergence of multiple IT infrastructures we were faced with enormous data growth," said Andy Fuss, Manager of Technology and Engineering of CharterCARE Health Partners. "It became clear that our traditional tape-based backup approach had reached its end and we needed to make a transformational shift in our strategy. EMC Data Domain and EMC NetWorker were a natural fit and have already dramatically improved our backup performance and reliability. As we look forward to the new NetWorker integration with DD Boost software, we expect to realize even greater improvements in performance and ease of use to help drive additional efficiencies throughout our backup process."

"EMC is fundamentally changing the way customers will manage backup and recovery," said Brian Biles, Vice President of Product Management, EMC Backup Recovery Systems. "The focus is no longer about source or target-based deduplication; it is on efficiency and ease-of-management for both. NetWorker now enables end-to-end, unified backup across the enterprise, fully integrating the best approaches to have emerged in the last decade into a complete solution." NetWorker integration with Data Domain will be available as a licensed option in the second half of 2010.
