There will also be a command-line interface, based on Windows Monad, for power users who want to be able to quickly script changes. Ressler characterized that as "quite a departure for Microsoft, a company that usually deals in GUIs."

"If you're a Unix person, or used to the command-line interface, this will be comfortable. It's also efficient for real-time management—if you need to add a single user right now, you just type in the command," Ressler said. It's also helpful for scripting routine operations comprising a complex set of steps.

The beta promises glimpses of long promised "unified messaging" perks, Microsoft promised last year.

For example, it will preview how more types of communications, including faxes and voice mail messages, can be routed to the e-mail inbox and then be accessed via PC or telephone.

"If you're on the road without smart phone or PDA, you can still call in enter your PIN and access these messages, have voice mail read to you via text-to-speech processing," he noted.
