External Disk Storage Market Continues To Boom, Revenue Up 9.9%

Revenue for the worldwide external disk storage market grew by 9.9% in the third quarter, with EMC leading the way, according to IDC. Worldwide revenue hit $4.3 billion as the market recorded its 14th consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth, the research firm said Friday.

EMC paced the external disk storage market in revenue gains, growing from $786 million in 2005 to $927 million this year, and in market share, rising from 20% in 2005 to 21.4% this year.

"High-end systems did well across the board," says Brad Nisbet, program manager at IDC's Storage Systems Program. "EMC's Symmetrix product line rebounded strongly in the quarter, particularly [for systems] above $300,000."

HP's second-place market share slipped slightly from 19% to 17.6%, although the company managed to increase revenue to $760 million from $746 million a year earlier. Nisbet notes that HP's Modular Smart Array family of low-end devices fell some 14%, but he says the line would get a refresh soon and recover.

"There was a marked increase in average size and selling price for disk storage systems in the third quarter, particularly for systems selling between $50,000 and $300,000," says Nesbit.
