As data protection software becomes more intelligent, it may appear as though we need less of the storage hardware that holds protected copies of the production data. Many data protection software vendors are actively promoting the concept that you can use any disk system as a backup destination. Should you use a cheap SATA array or a data protection storage system?

You simply can't add deduplication to backup software, use a cheap SATA
array, and feel good about protecting your data. If you are using
intelligent backup software, make sure you are still using reliable,
scalable disk hardware platform to put behind the backup server.
Preferably something that can provide deduplication capabilities to the
rest of the enterprise not protected by that particular backup
application.
