Wireless networks, WiMAX, and associated technologies should raise red flags as well. Yes, the technology is mainstream, and I have no doubt we're heading to a connected-everywhere world. But once again, there are simply too many companies after too little money. Selling home WiFi routers at $29.95 a pop is a tough sell as a business plan, and so is providing data wireless networking services when there are so many companies trying to get in on the action.

Next one up is IPTV. Here's a technology just getting its start, and so it's tough to know which companies will be in it for the long haul. Ultimately just about all video will be delivered to the home over IP, I believe. But that's quite some time away, and it's too early to tell which technologies will survive, and which die out. So at the moment, at least, this technology is not getting overhyped. Give it a year, though. Then expect it to jump to the top of the hype charts.
