VoIP Vendor Upgrades Wi-Fi Handset

Voice-over-IP vendor Net2Phone said Tuesday that has upgraded the firmware of the Wi-Fi phone it has been selling for use at public hotspots and plans to offer a new phone in the coming months.

The company said that its VoiceLine XJ100 Wi-Fi Handset now can scan for wireless networks and connect automatically. The company said the upgrades will occur automatically for existing users. In addition to automatic connections, the phones also can connect on the basis of profiles the user establishes for specific networks.

In addition, the updated phone now comes with a 110 volt and 220 volt power supply so it can be charged in any country. It also has basic phone features such as call waiting and caller ID and supports on-line management of the user's VoIP account.

The phone follows cell phone model and is available via wireless ISPs and other broadband vendors.

Net2Phone also said it would introduce its next-generation phone in the next few months but provided no details.
