Voice Over DSL Market Set To Skyrocket

The world wide voice over digital subscriber line (VoDSL) equipment market is growing at red-hot rate, according to Dittberner Aossociates, Inc., and is expected to quadruple by 2009.

The firm estimates that revenues will grow from $256 million last year, to more than $1 billion in 2009, despite a telecom industry downturn last year. The initial growth has been primarily in Japan, South Korea and Europe, and Dittberner expects the trend to continue and spread to North America and Internet service providers and telecommunications carriers adopt the technology.

According to Dittberner, there were 8.6 million VoDSL subscribers by the end of last year in Japan, South Korea and France, with penetration highest in Japan at a rate of 35%. It is only a matter of time before the rest of the world catches up, however, and the firm expects Japan to lose its lead as carriers in other countries begin to deploy VoDSL services.
