Time Warner Cable's VoIP Service Tops One Million Subscribers

Time Warner Cable on Monday said the number subscribers to its Internet telephony service has topped one million, with 75 percent of them also getting the company's digital cable and broadband services.

Time Warner and other cable operators are offering Internet telephony, often called voice-over-Internet protocol, or VoIP, as a counter-offensive to telephone companies building out networks to deliver TV over the Internet.

By offering TV, broadband and telephone services as a package, called a "triple play" in the industry, telephone and cable companies hope to lure customers from rivals and boost loyalty.

Time Warner Cable, a unit of media giant Time Warner Inc. is based in Stamford, Conn., and is looking to integrate its products. It recently launched a service that enables customers to view caller ID information on their television screens.
