Sloan-Kettering Deploys 10 Gigabit Ethernet Throughout Campus

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York is undertaking a massive upgrade and deploying 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) interfaces throughout its campus networks.

Supplied by Cisco Systems, Inc., the network hardware will support 8500 employees in addition to patients and visitors in 10 buildings and outlying clinics. It is designed to allow physicians to have immediate access to critical patient information, including high resolution digital images from the Center's Archival Communication Systems (PACS).

A major component of Memorial Sloan-Kettering's network upgrade includes wiring a new research facility with 10 GbE wiring closet uplinks and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to desktops to enable Genome data manipulation, modeling and imaging. 10 GbE will also support real-time, video collaboration between surgeons and specialists throughout the Center.

"We've invested in state-of-the-art networking infrastructure because the resulting ROI benefits enable us to better support our research and patient care objectives," Memorial Sloan-Kettering network director Elias Golfinopoulos said in a statement. "Every few seconds saved in making appointments, viewing radiology images or accessing patient records streamlines our operating efficiency and allows us to focus on cancer research and patient care."
