TRILL is well along the standardization path and is as good as done as is 802.1aq. When we will start to see them showing up in products (and whether this will be a software or hardware upgrade) is anyone's guess. Regardless of what you do with your network, you are going to want to use short-path bridging if you can. After coming back from Voicecon and hearing about the professed increased adoption of VoIP and video-conferencing, as well as other changes that are impacting the network, it's clear that the rigid network designs of today will be a hindrance tomorrow. Luckily, you don't have to make a wholesale switch, rather you can slowly migrate sections of you network.
