ExpertONE also features what HP calls "Fast Tracks," which enable students to skip certain classes if they've already been granted certification for that particular area, the equivalent of a college student applying credits earned at one school to the degree program at another. Thorough training is as important as the quality of the technology itself, maybe more so, according to Cushing Anderson, a program vice president at IDC who specializes in corporate learning and IT education.

IDC conducted an industry survey in 2008 that found over 60 percent of IT managers believe that the skill of their teams is the most important success factor for their IT organization, Anderson said, adding that well-trained teams derive more benefit from their technology than undertrained teams.

Besides the ExpertONE certification changes, the company also is offering HP Open Standards Network Planning and Migration Services, a new consulting service to help businesses plan and implement the migration process from proprietary technology silos to an open infrastructure
